Orion, from Oregon, USA: Events can “take place” and we can be “in place” or “in a place.” We can hold vigil, write letters, watch home movies in the very place where violence occurred—but place, too, has its ambiguities. There is—as with silence, or the sudden stop of a car, a palpable difference between general recognition of certain areas as “places,” and a personal sense of “place.”
