East/West
Single channel video, 1984/1987, 3min. 40sec.

East/West is videotape with two channels of sound, based on the artist's citizenship interview. The video image is of a mouth split in half, one half speaking English, and one half speaking Chinese. Occasionally, the two halves of the mouth come together to create a whole. The half-mouths reflect the artist’s struggle and conflict in reconciling two different cultures.

* This video was first shot in black and white in 1984 right after my citizenship interview, and was reshot in color in 1987.

On the Way Home

Video Installation: 7 monitors, 1 VCR, 1 electronic device, 1 slide, 1 slide projector, water. 1994

In a darkened gallery, the viewer comes upon seven monitors and a large, square tank of water placed in front of the monitors. The water represents a river. The video depicts a train trip around Taiwan. By using an electronic delay box, the image passes horizontally from one edge of the monitor to the other, and is picked up by the adjacent monitors, producing an illusion of the view from train windows. The installation becomes a train moving on a river with its reflection flowing over the water surface, shifting to a view from the train of continuous moving landscape as seen by the passenger on the train.
