In advance of presenting Brian Koelling’s visual work (he is also a musician and composer of amazing capacity), a long conversation was held where a great many things were discussed, some with regard to the work represented here, but mostly on tangential subjects.
Rather than edit the discussion on personal meanings found in the pieces presented, or the topic of doing work over not doing work, a couple of these tangential discussions are included, as those really give insight into his endless flow of ideas. Brian Koelling possesses one of the keenest interests into the ways our world works (or doesn’t), and as a result, his idea stream is deep, well-contoured, and refreshing.
The paintings represented here offer a view into a world of ever-expanding thoughts and situations. Quite a few allow for an overlapping of scenarios, times, settings, tones, meanings, an envelope of events, a world-views; all and more are present, but none explicit.
